Built in 1420 (the 18th year of the Ming-dynasty Yongle Emperor’s reign), the Fasting Palace covers nearly 40,000 square meters and is surrounded by two walls and two moats. The emperor stayed here for the purpose of fasting before conducting sacrifices. This well laid-out complex comprises the Beamless Hall, Residence Hall, Brass Figure Pavilion, Bell Tower, Guardroom, and Patrol Corridor. The building roofs are covered with green glazed tiles, symbolizing the emperor’s submission to Heaven in reverence.
