This was the emperor’s residence during his time of abstinence before sacrificial ceremonies. The horizontal plaque reads “Reverence and restraint.” The hall has five bays. The central bay was used for daily rituals and meetings with ministers. The northern bay was the bedchamber used in winter, featuring a bed with a warming canopy, underground heating and charcoal braziers for warmth. The southern bay was used in summer. The two other bays served as a living room and a study.
